Douglas made his boxing debut on May 31, 1981 and conquered Dan O’Malley in a four-round fight. On February 11, 1990, Douglas beat then-undefeated Mike Tyson in ten rounds to capture the undisputed world heavyweight championship in one of professional sports history’s all time biggest upsets. Douglas was a 42-1 underdog, as bookmakers gave him so little opportunity. Nevertheless, on October 25, 1990, Douglas was defeated by Evander Holyfield via third-round TKO in his only title shield.

After boxing, Buster made his feature film acting debut in the Artie Knapp science fiction comedy Pluto’s Predicament. He was the star of the video game James “Buster” Douglas Knockout Boxing.
